Guest Blogger from SXSW Brad J. Ward: Networking, Panels & Twitterstalking

This week many eyes have been on the town of Austin, Texas as the music, film, and interactive conference/festival known as SXSW takes place. I knew someone that was going to be at SXSW, armed with a Kodak Zi6, and he was nice enough to write a recap of his experience there.

I have officially survived my first trip to SXSW in Austin, TX. During my four days there I was able to soak in the southern sun, rub shoulders with the Twitterati, and record a little bit of my experience along the way!

I took my Kodak Zi6 with me to SXSW because I wanted something light and portable that could help me capture my time there. I also had my DSLR, but it stayed in the hotel room for most of my time because I didn't want to lug it around. The Zi6 proved to be just what I needed, and allowed me to capture a ton of video on my 8GB SD card. Here's a quick recap of my time at SXSW, which was a great overall experience.

I got in late on Saturday, which ended up not being that bad since temperatures were in the 40's and 50's before I arrived. Sorry, but that is NOT the Texas I want to visit in March. If I wanted cold weather, I would have stayed in Indianapolis. Since I didn't have any plans on Saturday night, I figured I'd see if I could meet up with some people I follow on Twitter. Enter.... Twitterstalking. I picked Scott (@scottyhendo), a fellow Hoosier, and started tracking his tweets while walking from my hotel down to the conference area. Once I pinpointed where he was (a longer than necessary process due to the dismal iPhone service you surely heard about), I went in for the kill and made him my first official victim.

Sunday was my first full day at the conference, and was also the day of my presentation. I spent the morning sitting in on panels and listening to some great discussions. Then I got ready for my Core Conversation Panel with Dylan (@dylanw) from the University of Washington. We talked about the web in higher education and how it differs from other sectors or industries. We had a packed room and they were turning people away at the door, which was great. The Twitter backchannel was pretty positive about the panel.

Right after our presentation was Gary Vaynerchuk's interview, so I ran back across the convention center to get a close seat. It was great to finally get to meet Gary. He's been a huge inspiration to me and it was awesome to be able to say thanks for everything. My business partner Joe (@fjgaylor) and I adopted Gary's 'Hustle 2.0' model back in September and worked many, many late hours (after hanging out with the family!) for several months, leading up to the launch of our company in January 2009. If you have never listened to a Gary V. presentation, leave right now and go do it. Seriously, don't even read the rest of this. But for those of you already in the Vaynernation, here's a photo of Gary and I.

SXSW definitely comes alive at night, and there is always something going on. Later that night I got to help Gary get the wine from the Hilton to the Tumblr Party - here's a quick video of that. Most nights we just bounced around from party to party sponsored by companies who just wanted to spend money on food and drinks for us, which was great. Here are a few photos of me in the crowd at random events that I found on Flickr: Helping carry a box of wine, Later that night-Wine Library Party, Sporting the Vaynernation wristband, Consuming massive amounts of free nachos.

Monday could not possibly top the previous night's events, but it was a great day of networking and hearing more panels and discussions. I wrapped up my SXSW experience Tuesday morning with a quick flight back up to Indianapolis to begin catching up on a few days out of the office. In all, SXSW was a great experience and if anyone is interested in learning more about the web, you're in the right place. - Brad J. Ward

St. Patrick's Day Photo Cup Wraps

If you are planning on throwing a St. Patrick's Day party here is a fun way to decorate and help your guests keep track of their cups.

Download and print out this Photo Cup Wrap template PDF and some pictures of your friends to fit the template. If you would like to make their photos a festive green, check Michelle's post on how you can do that with EasyShare Software!

Use the template to trace and cut out the cup wrap from your photos.

Place the Photo Cup Wrap around the cup and secure on the back with two small pieces of tape.

Cheers!

If you would like to see more detailed step by step instructions check out the Photo Cup Wrap project page on the Kodak Tips & Projects Center.
