One last look at Beijing

This will be the last of the Beijing posts, because as you can see here I took these pictures at the airport as I was leaving to return to the US.

The Beijing Capital International Airport has Terminal 3, which is considered to be the largest in the world.

Here is a shot to go with Tom's collection of superlative sign photos.

When I was at the airport, it certainly was charming. There were demonstrations of Chinese culture displayed throughout the airport. There were Chinese dancers...

... a calligraphy artist...

... a dough figurine sculptor...

... a paper cutter...

... and a Chinese knot artist.

I was so happy to snap a few more pictures as I left China.

Now it's time to start making prints and ordering photo books of my trip.

The Beijing Olympic Closing Ceremony

This evening, the Beijing Olympics came to an end at the closing ceremony.

Being there reinforced two things. First, the huge number of people that come together from all over the world. I met travelers from every corner of the globe. Seeing 90,000 lights around the stadium is a sight to see. So many people... "One World, One Dream".

The second thing is the joy, enthusiasm and eagerness that has been demonstrated by the Chinese people. The volunteers were always patient and eager to help. Our volunteer ceremony leader tirelessly led us through cheer after cheer throughout the night.

Even when we were away from the Olympic venues, the locals were quick to smile, issue a warm greeting and even pose for pictures. Long after I return home, I will look at my pictures and my videos and will remember these two things that made the Beijing Olympics so special.

Beijing Olympic Pin Trading

When I first read Tom's post about Olympic pins I decided I was going to do my best to do some serious pin trading at the Beijing Olympics and take pictures of my efforts.

I started off with the four Kodak pins.

Right at my first event I traded with this girl from the Philippines for a McDonalds pin.

I also traded with this girl at the USA house. She had so many pins she had a special tie to display them all. I was nowhere near this prolific. I needed to hone my pin trading skills.

Tom trades with her brother. He drives a hard bargain. But he is a seasoned Olympic pin trader.

I sat behind this pin fan at track and field and I must admit I had pin envy.

Today is the last day of the Olympics and here is where I am at. I think I did okay for my first time!

There is still a chance to get a free Olympic pin with your order at the Kodak Store.

Bikes and Pandas in Beijing

A big part of life in Beijing are bicycles. As the number of cars sold increases each year, the number of bikes drop but there are supposedly still about 10 million bikes in Beijing. You can see commuters, large item delivery couriers and entire families zipping by on their bikes.

It's not unusual to see hundreds of them all parked together.

Bike repair vendors set up shot right on the sidewalk for convenience.

Tom was feeling brave one afternoon and borrowed a bike from the hotel staff and went for a ride through Beijing. Here is the video he took on his bike ride.

He did make it back unscathed.

Here is something else you can see a lot of in Beijing... Giant Pandas. There is a slew of them at the Beijing Zoo. This is a video of a bunch of pandas munching away at a bamboo buffet. (Shot with a Kodak Zi6 Pocket HD Video Camera)

They really are ridiculously cute.

Capturing the sidelines of the Olympic Games

There is so much going on at the Beijing Olympics, it's hard to know where to point your camera. It can be interesting to direct your attention away from the main action and capture what is being done to support the games from the sidelines. (I also like to call these - "jobs I could do at the Olympics" - seeing as how I could never participate as an athlete)

There is the birdie distributor at badminton. The birdies are stored in the tubes in front of him.

And also the badminton synchronized floor wipers.

The team that brings out and takes in the boxes for the swimmers gear all move in unison.

The bell ringers let the swimmers know they are on their last lap.

Hurdles must be quickly set up and then quickly removed.

Perhaps the most fun job... driving the remote control cars that return the javelins and discus from the field.

As you can see there is a lot of work happening off to the side of your favorite athlete. I should probably stick with the blogging. I was interviewed by the IOC about Kodak blogging at the Olympics.

We are doing a pretty good job with the blogging. We were listed as number one of three top Olympic blogs! That means we win the gold right?

Speaking of medals, there is a debate going on here amongst the Kodakers at the Olympics. On some medal tallys, the country with the most medals is listed first. On others, the country with the most gold medals is listed first. Which do you think it should be? Leave us a comment and weigh in on this dispute.

Kodak around Beijing

I cannot help but look for the Kodak brand as I travel around Beijing. Of course we are on the Olympic sponsor posters.

And there are Kodak stores throughout the city.

You can find the Kodak brand in The Forbidden City... thanks to Jeff...

... and Phil.

Tom did his part by adding Kodak to Beijing at the Olympic Green.

And Kodak can also be seen in the hands of many happy picture takers.
